But then the title of the song would be "Cortez the Cannibal", and as we all know, this would not work: Neil Young is not Michael Gira.

Yep. That song sizzles and vibrates, especially towards the end. According to Shakey, David Briggs put together this version through mixing together two very different takes.

Which could be why the song is - how can one put it? - shakey, but in an exceptional way.

I think that the instrumental sections bestow this oddness, with some very violent guitar jabs interspersing broodier-sounding riffs and lazier-feeling chords. During these parts, to me the tempo feels wrong, or skew, which is enjoyably queasy.
