I like the Op.

I think when she wants to she can but people with money together with people who need it. Not enough people doing that full time. Also, the power she wields on her show can move some mountains... just by mentioning something on her show, she can make it an overnight success. I think more than not she does this for the good, not the bad. The reading club is a big GOOD. So was the Angel Network she used to do. I think she raises the bar for TV watching middle America and that in itself is a HUGE good, even if she can be a kiss-ass and panderer to the stars on one or two days a week.

I think some of her aesthetic opinions are pretty off based. Beloved was a drag of a movie and Toni Morrison is not really the great great writing she could bring her watchers. She often likes and celebrates movies for the wrong reasons (like they have blacks in starring roles even though they are terrible movies). Still on the scale, she is weighing heavily to the good in my opinion.

Her Harpo Studios is also a really nice facility where many of Chicago's commercial and TV producing happens. She is a smart businesswoman that seems to do things for the right reasons (i.e. not just for the money).

Reading is a lost art in this current world of ours. so a solid not crap from me. if she can get that many people to shut off the tube and feed their brains. well right fucking on oprah!
That being said the selection of books could be a little bit more edgy.
Just a imagine those housewives getting a copy some de sade or some
bukowski. That would be wonderful.
ChoCko is back in town!

My Problems with Oprah
by: bumble

1) She did a show on sexual assault and even though my colleague begged her to mention just once that men can be victims (saying "women and men who are..." instead of "women who are..."), O wouldn't do it. Flat. Fucking. Refused. Goddamnit!

2) There's this weird cultivation of crisis thing in American culture. Whenever I brave the grocery store for my weekly three pounds of bacon and bucket of Zima, the magazine covers in the check-out lane kindly let me know that there are 800 things wrong with my life. These compassionate magazines then provide the solutions (whew!). In my admittedly limited experience, O sometimes does the same thing. CRISIS! Then, band-aid (whew!). Three cheers for neuroticism and complacency.

3) I get a weird vibe of megalomania sometimes.

She has done some really great things. O! P! R! A! H!:

1) has started up a whole mess of schools
2) will freak out about 8,000 Good Americans when the guy in The Sound and the Fury gets castrated
3) does not often give off a weird vibe of megalomania.

Bradley R. Weissenberger wrote:"A Summer Of Faulkner" (a collection of the novels "As I Lay Dying", "The Sound And The Fury" and "Light In August") is this month's selection of the Oprah Book Club®.

There are going to be some baffled stay-at-home moms out there.

this is incredible. that's super cool.

insert obligatory 'an autumn of burroughs' joke here

anyway, to come from her background to be the wealthiest working woman on the planet, this is a high achievement. to do it and maintain some sense of responsibility to other people, to whatever degree it may be self-serving, this is even more admirable and noteworthy.
