Happy? Yes. i'm recording music and I give the locals something to sell at their shows.

I figure you have to start somewhere... and because of the deal I gave them, they hooked me up with about 6 other bands who are going to record with me now. I figure I will creep up the price as I go, And I will be able to buy more gear as i go.....

i'm not recording for the money anyway, i'm doing it because I love to do it.
Right now, I just want to get my name out there for doing quality records for a fair price....

I can't believe I actually wrote:... Think of the first compressor as keeping the quietest parts up, and use the second compressor to keep the loud parts from getting unmanageable...

Essentially, I described what one compressor does. Great.

I'm hoping I get a pass since I described the situation when I wrote:... I'd actually come up with some better ideas, but I've got a headache from wearing my old prescription after snapping my glasses last night...

For real, it was like looking around in a fishbowl.
This is going to get worse before it gets any better.

A weird thing to do would be record 1 vocal take with 2 mics to 2 tracks (same make of mic) set the level for mic 1 for the soft parts, the level for mic 2 for the loud.
Put mic 1 in the mix where you like the level of the soft parts and slam the compressor (Like 10:1 or a lot more) with the threshold set for only when he sings loud. Pushing the loud part way under the quite part. Then just gate the soft part out of the other mic (2) and ste the level where you like it. I bet that would sound like shit.
It would most certainly fuck up the phase. But technically speaking would work.

Ignore all of that.
