How would recording performance be if I ran a stripped down version of XP in VMware or something? I've never explored virtualization. It seems like it would be slower than a completely separate installation.

I see why you're doing it. Virtualization would not be for recording. The "sound card" in the virtual machine would not be adequate for what you need.

If you wanted to run from one install, you could set your machine to boot clean, meaning no programs loading on boot and setting non OS services to start manually instead of automatically.

4 - 500gb internal drives.

1 - osx/apps.
1 - general storage/backup.
2 - raid 5 array for audio.

i always try to keep my os/apps on a seperate physical drive from the audio recording. having a seperate partition on the same drive does not increase performance (in fact, will decrease it depending on how far the drive head has to travel to access the second partition), and doesnt protect against data loss in case of drive failure.

You must mean Raid mirror (0+1)

Raid 5 requires 3 disks minimum.

Oops....i killed the raid 5 array when i wanted the 3rd disk for random storage. Now the other two are concatenated JBOD.

I tried setting my computer up to do just this, and ended up fucking it up irrevocably, and having to wipe the drive and start all over.

Ah. I did mine as a clean install, so I had already wiped the drive. I had no problems at all, but I may have just been lucky.
