i wanna say it was the MTV video awards show, though that may not be it. they're performing "Enter Sandman" and there are two really atrocious qualities to it. the lesser of the two is the "now i lay me down to sleep" section, where james steps back from the mic and a recording plays the exchange between him and a kid, just like the album would. the problem is not that he steps away from the mic, but rather i find that commendable. the problem is the pacing. the section of the song ends and they've gone into the next part before the recording has reached its end. so it just comes across as kinda stupidish.

the really bad part was the vocal "harmonies" during the pre-chorus (the "sleep with one eye open, gripping your pillow tight" line). everywhere i've seen it written about, they claim that newsted's vocals were horribly out of tune, and eventually his mic just had to be turned off. the way i remember it, newsted is alright (though not perfect) but hetfield has moved to some very odd register to sing his part in, a place where there are mostly non-notes. it seemed to me like hetfield was the one who was destroying the "harmony". regradless of who was at fault, it sounded *terrible*. painful.
