The show didn't exactly end as much as it devolved until Bobby was standing near the lanes with his face against the wall crying, with mascara running down his face.

I know theres a degree of shitck to it all but it was a pleasurable, weird experience to have an anti-climatic, un-happy ending to a New Years' Eve show.

Bobby Conn put on one of the best shows I've ever seen opening for Trans Am at the Talking Head in Baltimore... the band (sans Bobby) came on and did requests until Bobby himself showed up, whereupon he made some derogatory remarks about how "things might have been different" if he'd known the Talking Head was the ex-Ottobar, and the owner of the club then rushed the stage saying "in that case you can just leave."

They did.

I have seen many of the bands mentioned in this thread. None of them kept me absolutely rapt in attention or made me feel as physically uncomfortable (series of unconnected disturbing thoughts running through my head, each displacing the previous, less perverse one) as Kansas legends Mudhead, who also had the benefit of being really good.

They had no schtick, no gimmick. Their vocalist had some physical problems, but that's not it either. There was some kind of purging going on that I find hard to describe.

Perhaps Mark Greenberg has some photos he can post...

have you heard the nels cline/gregg bendian version of Interstellar Space? it's a lot like the sun city girls doing Live in Seattle, except instead of walking into a restaurant and putting the record on they actually play the entire thing with drums and guitar, and then release it on Atavistic. it's pretty incredible, one of my favorite records of the last four years.

i drove 3 hours to see Cock ESP "play" for roughly 15 seconds.

There's nothing I've seen that I would genuinely call wierd, but I've seen some hilarious shit, out here on the edge of the world - top of the list would be the Goat Fucking Nun Rapers - GFn'R for short - playing at the White Hart public bar in New Plymouth in 1989. The key personality in GFn'R was a bloke by the name of Nigel Toxic, who was known to sometimes really get down to the set, to the extent that on one occasion he dropped his pants mid-solo and jammed a drumstick up his arse, sodomised himself good and hard, then threw the stick into the audience.

Funny on sooo many levels.

edit: No prizes for guessing that GG Allin was big out my way (NZ) when I was growing up.

About 10 years ago my roommate's band opened for Crash Worship at this run-down theatre in Chicago. All I could see when Crash Worship was playing was a bunch of people crowded around a fire in the middle of the place, freaking out.

The girl I was with decided to get closer to see what was going on and it terrified me. I was seriously scared for her life. It seemed like everyone crowded around the fire was not at all in their right minds...and the place was going to burn down any second.
