It's actually pretty meaningless.

You write and record a song, send it to the record company.

They say it's a hit and they want it, or it's shit and they don't.

The only difference is that it's a PC rather than some scum of the earth A&R guy/girl.

At least you can play games and do your accounts and download dodgy Manga on PCs; thus in my opinion they are SIGNIFICANTLY superior to A&R.

It's not even worth getting incensed about something like this. If you're making music because you want to drive a platinum Aston Martin DB8 or live in a house made out of gold bars then where's the shame in, well, being shameless? This is of minimal importance for most of the people here because I imagine (possibly naively) they're doing what they do because they fucking enjoy it.
I can't imagine any of the labels/artists we care about giving an airborne arsefuck about making it into the top 20 anyway.
Personally, I'll be sending them a copy of my new album to rate. Grindcore soul will one day be as big as hip-hop.

I read this article and others, and I think it's a load of old bollocks. So do these software people offer a full money-back guarantee if they fail to go top 5 with every single that scores the required points? If Norah Jones wrote the same mathematical songs but looked like the back end of a bus would she still have her pretty little 'crossover' hits? This is high-tech fucking snake-oil. And in the brave new zero-sale singles all-dowload niche-cross-cookie marketeering bullshit that pop is becoming, will "no HSS" become the cool thing cool A&R departments will yadda about? Has anyone double-blinded this thing? Of course not. Absolute fucking snake oil, which will be bought by idiots, and will be an accelerant to the rotting of the corpse of the record industry. Good fucking riddance.

I have not heard this particular shit-fest, but at least it is not being foisted directly on the public. About five years ago I used to enjoy the phrase "mash-up" and what it entailed enormously, now 99% of them make me want to reach for my Luger.

A Mash up is basically a dj playing key elements from two or more songs simultaneously, thereby creating a "new" version of something.

While occasionally it works (Missy Elliot's Git Ur Freak On mixed with the rhythm of AC/DC's Back In Black is excellent), usually it's tripe (like the Jayz/linkin park album).

At that point everybody seemed to develop an irreverent streak and some very poor mash-ups were born. Think of two vastly disparate artists - say The Swans and Mariah Carey, and then stitch them together.
