(some of these are just blatantly obvious, while others are influenced by whatever I've been listening to lately... and I'm sure there's a jillion I'll think of later):

Pictures Of Matchstick Men - Camper Van Beethoven
California Dreamin' - Eddie Hazel
Que Sera Sera - Sly & the Family Stone
Youth Of America - Melvins
Angie - Tori Amos
Right Place, Wrong Time - JSBX
Writing On The Wall - The Fiends
Hush - Deep Purple
This Is A Man's World - The Residents
Astronomy Domine - Voivod
A Shot In The Dark - Naked City
Forward To Death - NoMeansNo
Running Out Of Fools - Neko Case
To Love Somebody - Slobberbone
Hey Joe - Buckwheat Zydeco
Earthquake - Butthole Surfers

and of course:

I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For - Negativland

Definitely second the Devo and Toots covers.

Stevie Wonder - We Can Work it Out
Afghan Whigs - Creep
Coba (????) - Walk Don't Run

(I have this CD of Japanese surf music, and it doesn't have any artist name, it just says "Produced by Coba", so I'm going to pretend that Coba is the artist... I don't know... anyway, it's a pretty killer cover of Walk Don't Run)

I also once heard a snippet of a cover of "Hit Me Baby One More Time", and it was complete shit, but it was less shit than the original, so I guess you could technically say it was better than the original.
Why do you make it so scary to post here.

I'd have said the original wasn't much improved on there, to be honest; their cover of 'Astronomy Domine' was much more worthwhile - the song was crying out for it.

Nomeansno's 'Beat on the Brat' was pretty good.

I see your point, but the ultra-metal drum-fills of the Viovod version are completely irrestistable to my ears in a comedic sense.

I love the Beatles but Joe Cocker's cover of "A Little Help From My Friends" is fueled and huge and on fire! Joe had an amazing band behind him including Carol Kaye on bass, Jimmy Page, Tony Visconti, Albert Lee, and Steve Winwood in addition to his backing band with full horn section.

Joe Cocker also did a great job with "The Letter" by the Box Tops (featuring the young Alex Chilton).
