"See the little fa**ot with the earring and the makeup"

Yeah... Probs not today.

Mr. Knopfler no longer uses that word in live renditions.

Last week doing my regular Friday night DJ set (for my partner and my dog) and DJ'd myself into a corner with a Kraftwerk bootleg.
Quick thinking and I mixed my way out of it with Temporary Secretary - got a good refresh of the dodgy lyrics in that one.

During 'I'm a Boy' which is just before 'A Quick One While He's Away' by The Who, on the 'Live at Leeds' album – this has some really dubious monologue from Pete Townsend, particularly in light of his previous kid porn buying arrest a good while back now... great album, but this part is just so wrong

It got played on AM and FM radio ... hell, it got played everywhere. And no one batted an eye. I'm not saying that was a better attitude, just something for young folks to wrap their heads around.
Ah yes, "you've been around, but you're young and clean". And that wasn't an anomaly! There's a whole genre of 70s mainstream creeper anthems. Hot Child In The City? Please Go All The Way? Rod Stewart's Tonight's The Night is a nonstop barf fest from start to finish, but the line "spread your wings and let me come inside" is just so disgusting I can taste the bile every time.

In the context of the song, the female character calls the male character a term considered very inappropriate. I think there may have been some controversy about it when the song was first released, but there is even more so now; radio stations refuse to play it uncensored, and when the song is covered, others will either change the lyrics or omit that verse altogether.
IIRC Kirsty MacColl is pretty obviously (and capably) playing a role in this song. It's a tearjerker so I don't listen to it often, but when I do I am imagining a stage play and that somehow allows me to tolerate it.

Dicks Hate the Police is a problematic example.

Basically, I now have a hard time hearing hurtful words come out of the mouths of people who are not the targets of those words, and that seems to be a good rule to live by.

I wrote a satirical piece a few years ago on why Tonight's The Night is the worst song in recorded history. The "spread your wings" line is indeed barfy but my personal favorite is "Don't say a word, my virgin child." Ewwww.
