I'm more a fan of citrus fruits than apples as a go-to snack, but for apples I think the Honey Crisp is the one I'd pick over the others I've tried. I like them on the tart side. Cooked apples in pies, pastries, or bread/muffins on the other hand- oh man, I can't get enough! I love the taste of apples in spices. One of the best pies I've ever had was made with Arkansas Black apples. They held their body, weren't mealy and seamed to open up flavor-wise after being cooked. Ate one before the pie was made and didn't really think much of it, but in that pie, they were something else.

Jazz baby, jazz.

True story about apples: years ago I mastered this record...we had to do a few revisions, which is no big deal, but the dude I was talking with was like "you've been so super patient and helpful on this project, I feel like we should send you a cake or something." I said aw no worries, and I prefer pie to cake anyway. And he replies "actually my wife (and bandmate) is a champion pie maker, like literally, she competes in pie making contests. What flavor do you want?" I said "apple, please and thank you".

A week later the pie shows up. Good god. That lady won pie making contests for a reason.

Two that I've had from farmers that are not on this list are Cortland and Mutsu. They are incredible. For common grocery store apples I'm usually Honeycrisp or Fuji if the Honeycrisps are absurdly expensive. The difference between ripe fresh orchard apples and grocery store apples is about a million miles.

Mutsu is a good apple! Haven't seen them around in years though so forgot about those. Never heard of Cortland.
