The charcoal idea is super neat. Will be trying this next time we have a puppy that ruins a rug.

I want to quickly chime in though about the specific nicotine/tar deal. Anyone who has ever been home shopping or had a heavy smoker in their life knows that this stuff is called tar for a reason. Gets everywhere, stains/sticks to walls. I'd probably give the thing a good scrubbing first before the charcoal. Maybe w/ a scented solution like the lemon or orange Simple Green or the stuff someone else here recommended which was the same for many ducats less. Or even warm water and Dawn.

Would probably do that first if you haven't already, THEN the charcoal.

LA's Totally Awesome cleaner. Get it at Dollar Tree. I've used it on probably 5 or 6 amp cleanup jobs including one that definitely was covered in nicotine, and it worked great. Completely disassemble the cab, including removing any feet or corner protectors. Basically get it down to just the wood and to(r)lex, then spray it on and scrub. Blast it with piss or a hose to rinse, assuming it's not made of MDF or something, and dry it off with a hair dryer or leaf blower or towel and bright sunlight. The wood will be fine as long as you don't soak it in water for hours.

Actually the charcoal alone seems to be working.

llllllllllllllllllll wrote: Sun Jun 15, 2025 4:52 pm I have a Beyer TG V90r ribbon mic that kinda smells like… something. Weirdly sweet, could be incense, could be something worse, don’t know.

I had considered it a Cole Picks Vintage candidate for refurbishment but wonder if I couldn’t put it in a box with this charcoal shit and see what happens.
It worked for the amp
I may try it on the ribbon mic case but I’m afraid to use it on the mic.

This charcoal stuff… it just cleans scent sorta? Doesn’t get fine powders or anything anywhere? Can’t have that at all for my use
