I moved countries and as to not become a hoarder again I had gotten my guitar/bass rigs to two separate but satisfying and practical setups.
Ten years later I have a ton of stuff again, but god damn if I don’t like looking at it when not playing it. Most of it is weird and It makes me happy.
I had a coworker who had +130 guitars. It was insane. He had the attic space for the cases at least. He built storage everywhere. He just retired and started selling things off. The appreciation alone made it a better bank account. It would stress me out but he had fun and stayed married.
Re: Studio/Gear Minimalism/Shrinkage
12I'm not a super sentimental guy, but when it comes to some gear, it turns out I am. I have an old Les Paul Classic that I rarely play. It's a great guitar, but my guitar tech since I was a teenager is who fronted the money for me to buy it. Every time I see that I guitar, I think of him and how he helped me out twenty years ago. That's a rough one to get rid of. I have fucking TWO Ampeg B-15s. One was a gift from an old friend/customer who heard I was starting to collect some studio gear. He saved it from one of the old high schools in town that was just going to throw it in the trash. The other one I bought from a friend of mine who was trying to raise some money for some medical debt who ultimately passed a couple months ago. So those are both the, "I don't need two of these, but they're rare around here and make me think of my friends" items. That and they both sound great.
Without a doubt I could launch some pedals. There are things that are cool that I used a bit when I first got them, but they just kind of sit now like Chase Bliss Generation Loss. Or my DOD Rubberneck that just got beat out by another delay I dig. But those pedals don't take up as much room as instruments and amplifiers.
The Bass VI, the Gretsch Gin Rickey acoustic that I can run through weird effects, the plethora of small amps like a Pro Junior or Silvertone 1481 that are just fun to play through or record even though I have a Deluxe Reverb, Princeton Reverb, Vibro-Champ, or Ampeg Gemini... That's the hard stuff to weed out.
I've been pretty smart about actual studio gear thus far. I have a respectable mic closet (or shelves) with mics I know really well. If I buy something, there's a good reason for it. I have very simple chains for drums and vocals set up to go into the box. I don't do a lot of mixing out of the box. I might send some stuff to some effects pedals from time to time, so that's not too bad.
Mostly, I feel like I'm venting out loud here. It's hard to choose which stays and goes. Then I get overwhelmed. Then I just let the stuff stay and I'm constantly walking around it heh.

13LOL. Your amp was built in a New York City apartment that has absolutely had a Marshal Major cranked in it. But there are exceptions to every rule.llllllllllllllllllll wrote: Wed Dec 31, 2025 8:49 pm Unless it’s a Marshall Major in a New York City apartment there is nothing stopping you.
The jam room at my old loft. Five floors up, concrete everything, and anything was cool before 10PM:
