ESPN is currently way too busy with their Spelling Bee coverage.

spelling bee is over. are they rerunning it?

that kid who won was a fuckin' machine

As someone who truly appreciates the psychology, strategy and drama of poker, I am nevertheless bored by its constant coverage. Frankly, it seems like there is a "World Series" or "Tournament of Champions" or some other hyperbolic title used to identify every plain jane competition.

I would also like to throw the ESPN poker announcers into the moat, particularly Norman Chad.

Russ, you have lost your mind. Salut, poker-loving-so-much-it-makes-him-crazy Russ.

By the way, am I the only one confused as to why this old parlor game has now emerged as such a cultural force? It's really odd, although I guess the assholes did eventually seize upon martinis and cigars, too.

norman chad is the worst. at least vince van patten is crassly entertaining at times.

brad, the worst of the poker shows, she is celebrity poker. i am to watch this once, at someone else's place. it was on in background. the girl from the movie, she is won! she plays bare ace so much! and she win b/c the other guy, they play 8 6 suited all the fahgina time. it is like making of a head ache to watch this.

brad, i think poker started being massively popular when a) the money picked up, like when people started taking down over a million dollars in the big tourneys, and b) when total chumps started winning.

the world series especially promoted both of these things. robert varkonyi won a couple mil in 2002 playing out of his ass. just terrible. and chris moneymaker wasn't a lot better a couple years ago. luck is a big part of hold 'em, but it was a BIG part for these guys.

these phenoms have convinced people that anyone can win vast sums of money playing cards, if only they are 'gutsy' enough in playing their 'hunches.' which is nice if you are a seasoned pro, i reckon.

I am with you.

I spent a fair amount of time playing poker last year. Some days I won, some days I lost. Every day I was bored out of my fucking mind. I quit when the host stopped serving scotch at the game. He had some nice scotch.

Okay, the $1500 is underway. They are playing 11 to a table and it's full. When people bust out, alternates are put in. If they get in 337 alternates (which isn't unlikely) they'll break the record from last year.

Quote from Mike Pualle's blog:
"Not only are there 2200 players seated, there are literally hundreds of people milling around taking in the whole thing. Tobey Maguire walked through the crowd and no one even noticed his presence."

It must be so crazy.

Title: Daniel Negreanu: "I need some money"
Log: Daniel Negreanu just busted out heads up against Marco Traniello. After the hand Daniel, in the ESPN camera limelight, said he needed some cash to pay for his next event buy-in. Marco threw Daniel a gangster roll of cash. Negreanu stripped out $50, tossed it back to Marco and went on his way.

From Daniel Negreanu's Forum.

It surprises me that Daniel would take a $50 bill. Fifty dollar bills are notorious for being bad luck. Poker players usually avoid them like the plauge.

It's not as much fun as it would seem. I was surprised to find, in January, that he is not as big an asshole as the TV coverage would have you believe.

He is a bit of a jerk, but there's scores of players much, much worse than he is.

I look forward to going to the WSOP this year, mostly because of all the unfamiliar players I wil get to photograph.

Oh, and Robert Varkonyi may have appeared to have played rather sloppily in 2002, but he and his "coach", JP (who was the mastermind behind the MIT blackjack team in the 80's/90's) have written out actual playbooks that he bases his decisions on. Robert's game is more of a math based game than others, which is why he appears to make some pretty odd decisions at times.
I make music/I also make pretty pictures
