yeah, that looks real safe with 2 kids on back there barnhart. let’s just say that chicago’s traffic intensity is about 1 million notches above denton, tx’s. the last thing i’d want is to be hit while riding a bike with my kids on the back.

I'll bet you could find a used Suzuki Samurai for pretty cheap. Those are supposed to be very safe, especially when taking corners at high speed. You should try that.

I'm not convinced that you're serious, since the things you bring up (Smashing Pumpkins, Hummers) are the sort of thing that raises this boards' collective hackles. But taking you at your word, I'd say that the best thing you can do for your kids, and for your kids' kids, is to not buy a Hummer. Not only do these cars use fossil fuels & contribute to global warming more than most any other, the purchase of such a car encourages car manufacturers to continue manufacturing these environmentally unfriendly beasts.
Anything that can be done to encourage recent trends towards environmentally friendly cars, like hybrids etc., should be done. Anything that can be done to discourage companies from manufacturing things like Hummers, should be done. If you've got $30k or so to spend on a car, buy an awesome hybrid, or at least something that gets decent mileage.

Can you put a car seat in a Hummer? Maybe in an H2 I suppose. Anyway - to me the buy-a-big-car mentality seems so strange and unwise. The world is getting warmer, the burning of fossil fuels contributes to it... it just seems better to burn as little as we can, given the choice.
The other thing about Hummers & other huge cars is that, in the case of a fender-bender or other accident, they're likely to demolish whatever car they bump into. So they're possibly safer than many, though not all, other cars for you & your family; but they're bad for rest of the world in many ways.
They're also bad for the roads, and are (supposedly, and unenforceably) illegal on many surface streets.

consider the following:
a) you live in a congested metropolitan area where parking is at a premium. You're contemplating a vehicle that isn't small or maneuverable, and has lousy visibility out the back
b) your safety in a vehicle has at least as much to do with your skill behind the wheel as the size of weapon you operate. I log over 25k miles each year in Chicago and it's surroundings and haven't made contact with another vehicle in over 10 years. I haven't needed a large conveyance to achieve this safety record, because I drive with my head screwed on straight
c) you've seen reports of GM's profitability lately? Some of the red ink is because of the drop in sales of high profit SUVs. Got that? High profit SUVs. See, they make much more money on each H series (and stuff like the Denali and the Escallade) they sell because they jack the price up because people are stupid enough to pay an inflated price for them, just 'cause they're big or some segment of society considers them prestigious for some reason. Hummers aren't that expensive to manufacture. In fact, given the highly automated nature of the Hummer facility, they're relatively cheap to make compared to vehicles made in older plants with more manhours/vehicle required. Go ahead and pay more than the cost to manufacture if you want, but do it with your eyes open. GM likes you to give them your extra money...in fact, their executives NEED it right now
d) waste all the hydrocarbons and pollute all the atmosphere you want too, just prepare to suffer the slings and arrows you'll deserve for being profligate with the planet's resources. Vehicles like the H series give others a justifiable reason to brand you a pig
e) the more money you spend on gas, the less you have for microphones. This alone would be a deal breaker for me
