interesting that "safe" seems to mean more like "okay" then what i expected, which would be for it to be short for "safe home", which i like a lot and think of as an only-slightly-less-geeky expression than "godspeed!"

this reminds me of the goodbye i might use most of all, and forgot all about, "get home safe". which i say pretty much every time i'm saying goodbye to someone who is leaving and about to drive home, or if i'm being a supertard, i say to someone as they're exiting my car when i've dropped them off at their home.

i think "get home safe" is the one that makes the most sense to me of all of them. it's the goodbye where i'm always saying exactly what i mean, precisely, literally. it's genuine well-wishing.

in the course of human conversation its necessary to say dumb overused stuff, and a variety of it. take cares a fine example, and i will vote NOT CRAP despite holding no strong opinion

I like 'take care' because I completely believe in what it is saying....taking care is exactly what I want everyone around me (and around people I know and like) to be doing.... to be taking care...to be full of care....to be careful.

If more people had actions that were full of care, I think we would all be better off.

for a long while i ended conversations with "later" + random rhyming word.

i stopped doing this. now i just say "later." which is short for, "i'll see you later." which i generally will.

In response to Toomanyhelicopters, I guess I say "Be Safe" a lot also. It depends on the situation...like if someone is leaving a bar, a party or having to drive a long ways to where they are going...and when I lived in Russia I said it without exception. I didn't realize how much I say it.
I mean it in all sincerity when I say it too. I am always freaking out that someone will get into a car wreck.

... you are full of shit. Life is for our amusement and it is not shallow to say. I really want people, after they are departing from me, to have fun in what ever they are doing. Really....and if they are already having fun, then keep it up! I think that it can be taken to me several things. Not just "jumping on a trampoline" or your mom's bed, but just not letting things get you down....

How about a "Rock On" or "Rock 'n Roll" as a sign off or "Hail Satan"? I hear all of these a lot....

In Japan, you hear "ki o tsukete", which probably ought to be translated as "take care" in this context, but we always learned as "be careful", so it sounds a little strange, but nice. Literally, it translates as something like, "connect with the feeling" or "attach to the spirit", so that's fun.

have fun is a hippie dippy send-off. the equivalent of a limp wristed handshake or a silent nod through sunglasses. the fact is we do have a lot of work to do. sometimes it's not fun. sometimes it's hard. i know you listen to fugazi so this should not be a foreign subject.

"be well" is a much more acute way of saying "don't let things get you down." i like that.

When one of my customers is having a hard time, I'll often send him or her off with a "hang in there!" I don't know.

This is a good one, especially if they follow with "what're you up to?" and you answer, "pretty good".

If you're using "take care" to end an email, it's kind of funny to type it "take air". People get confused (I did the first time I saw it anyway).
