eephour wrote:I've come to the decision I need a new console. I'm housesitting for my teacher in the summer and would like to get a new system to last me though the year, possibly longer. So I might as well pick it up in August.

I thought about buying a new ps2, my old one has that annoying disc read error. And The new ones are small and cheap, so how could I go wrong?

But, maybe its time for someting new. As of today I'm considering getting
an xbox. Its got great games and is under 200 beans. Maybe even get one with a mod-chip put in, even though that seems really technical...

Or, should I pony up and get a 360?

Is it lame to get an xbox this summer? How much longer will they be making games for it?

360 looks great, but its really pricey and has features that I don't really care about, like the online stuff. The new games are pretty expensive but look amazing. I guess it will be like an investment and will keep me busy all of next year or so.

But, Can I play regular xbox games on it?

Anyway I hope this ramble isnt too disjointed. So, kind fellows of EA what would you do? new ps2, xbox, or 360.

You should just wait an extra month or two and get one of the new Nintendo systems. It will likely be $199, though there have been rumors that it will be $249, and nintendo hasn't announced a price yet.

In similar moral fashion to johnnyshape, I would say do NOT get an Xbox or Xbox360. Yes, Ninja Gaiden is tight. Yes, Halo is fun, but welcoming Microsoft to the gaming industry is like welcoming Good Charlotte into the punk clique. Sony's been in the game long enough for me to consider them legit, but they're still complete corporate turdlicking prostitutes. Nintendo makes video games and video game consoles. They do not make TVs, boomboxes, mp3 players, computers, etc. I am highly inclined to believe that Microsoft started making video games because Billy has so much money and saw it as an up and coming business that Microsoft had the opportunity to get in on. To be honest, though, I don't know why the guys in Good Charlotte started a band.

And on that note, I would like to call bullshit on johnnyshape's comment about how there is nothing punk rock about video games. Yes, they require money and proprietary dev. kits for the system you want to make a game on, but there's nothing stopping you from starting your own company, buying a dev. kit, and making a game for a platform, except maybe money, but if you're into making punk rock (music), then you need money to buy instruments (to make music) anyways. I suppose you could argue that its easier to find a guitar to steal than a dev. kit for PSP or Game Cube, but you don't have to steal shit to be punk rock, do you?

Sure, you will invest a lot of money into your game (album), and you might not recoup nearly that much from sales, but that's not too far from what happens with punk rock anyways, is it?

As an example of a potentially punk rock video game company, I would like to cite Grasshopper Manufacture, but they don't have their own website and I'm only pretty sure that they're an independent company.

What's the deeeeal with Nintendo though?

I own a Gamecube, and I chose to get that console because I have always loved the original Nintendo games & characters.

But they just can't seem to get as many games as the other systems! I can't count how many times I've wanted to rent a game (or own a game) and can't because its for PS2, XBox, and NOT Gamecube. I asked about a Street Fighter anthology game earlier in another thread. Nope, sorry....not for Gamecube. What gives?

Will this ever change? Is it going to change with Revolution?

Sorry! It's not revolution.....its now..........

Wii!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wtf?!? I just read a funny review of this. The reviewer wonders how you will ask a friend if they want to come over a play Wii.

"Hey, you wanna come over and play with my Wii?"

They are asking to be put out of business!

Video games are CRAP. I might play them if I'm at a friend's place but I stopped spending money on this shit years ago.

This is the complete list of video games that I have enjoyed:

Suikoden
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
Metal Slug (funny as hell)
most of the Contra games
the G.I. Joe arcade game
Unreal
most Street Fighter type games
Resident Evil 1 & 2 (scared the shit out of me in Jr. High)
motherfuckin DOOM
Final Fantasy III and VII
Chrono Trigger
Super Metroid
the first Zelda game for the N64
a couple of years ago when I was staying with my brother, I played this really neat WWII shoot-em-up game on his computer. It was pretty badass. Maybe it was that Medal of Honor game? I dunno.

Pinball's better.

Yeah, that is the one drawback of XBOX, its fuckin Microsoft. I think I can get my buddy to sell me one, his girl left him and took the TV. Anyway, the one thing drawing me towards an xbox is the modifications. With a mod chip and an new HD you can rip games right to the drive. So, I can stick it to ole Bill thataway I guess...

A PS2 might just do the trick, its small, cheap, and I already have some games for it back home.

I'm just kicking around the idea though, I won't even get a console until August.

Video games are both Crap and Not Crap.

There are crap video games and if you spend all your time playing them, you will turn into crap. Even if you live in the middle of nowhere and there's not crap to do.

Living by DC and close to Baltimore, there is too much better crap for me to do involving exercise, art and music. In this light, video games do appear a waste of time.

However, my problem with video games is that I'm a completist, they provide a good veg-out type escape, and I'm too damn good at many of them.

I find good excuses to play as I travel for work and my Nintendo DS erases the reality of drab hotels when I don't feel like reading.

I also will sometimes drop everything I'm doing to catch up with the series that have continued since my youth. I'm a total sucker for Metroid and Castlevania, and sometimes Zelda and Metal Gear.

I did some time on my Mac with Diablo 2 as well. That's about as 'fantasy' as I like to get. Most RPGs are too D&D cult/dorky for me to stomach.

Katamari Damacy smacks them all though as something most anyone with a quirky sense of humor could play and appreciate.

One of the reasons I have a date next week is because I like Katamari. It's just one reason she likes me, but I'm being for serious. She may even play more than I. "I will go out and get drunk with you because you like Katamari". Those were her words.

To be fair, I've also seen couples split up and/or divorce over effects of the too much video-gamin. Thinking you're going to be ok with your online virtual Orc friends in the aftermath of one of these breakups almost makes it seem like a disease that needs to be treated.

I'll be happy if there is at least 10 really good games for it, otherwise I'll be mildly annoyed.

Nintendo does have a tendency to shoot themselves in the foot. The N64 controller is a perfect example of this. Nobody on earth has three hands.

They also obviously have shit for a marketing department. Zelda should have been out on gamecube months ago and then redone for the, ahem, Wii. I think one of the reasons gc didn't get a lot of games was because it used those dirty 3" dvds, so the manufacturers would have had to do split disks, which is mor expensive, or not at all. I am bummed that so many chose not at all. It is likely that two years down the line a similar thing will happen involving Wii's graphical power. The 360 has four video processors and most games still only use one, and sony's going with blu-ray for disk space. Nintendo finally reached full DVDs, but they won't be able to reasonably compete with the other systems when the games take full advantage of the hardware. Not to mention, of course, porting the control schematic of a game to the Wiimote & nunchuck thing.

You can download most games from all past nintendo systems and sega genesis and some others too, which is a nice bonus, but doesn't really equal anything out.

they have zelda though, and the new mario looks ill. i can only hope we get mario party and that collaboration between the killer 7 guy and hideo kojima.

eephour,

I'd consider waiting until the Playstation 3 is released. Backwards compatibility is a major selling concern of Sony, so most PS2 games should work on the PS3.

However, knowing Sony, the PS3 could be exorbitantly, even prohibitively, expensive.

Also It will not be released by August 2006.

Thanks, yeah it was funny last night I got to talkin with by buddy on the same subject. It might it worth it to start a little savings for when the ps3 drops. If I get a new ps2 for like 130 in a few months it can hold me over. PS3 is going to revolutionize things. I heard it was running on something just as powerful as a google server.
