The biggest influence on the Germs were Bowie and Queen. And the Runaways.
But that was lost on on the people the Germs influenced. (80's US HC)
Most of them were imitating Black Flag and the Ramones. And the Damned.
I don't think post Punk was necessariy better or more original, just a progression. (Some people regressed. Oi, Two Tone.)

ummm...Crass?...british punk...70's...
there were a few comments about the narrowness of hardcore, which i agree for the most part...but the exceptions were staggering...especially Black Flag, pretty much the poster band for hardcore, yet their music went so far beyond its usual implications...

I don't agree with this at all. Give me the heady sugar rush of the Ramones over The Pistols' snotty "look 'ow outrageous we are" act anyday.
It's interesting that despite their later-career records folks are more willing to call bands like Husker Du punk than they are bands like Joy Division. I'm going with 70's UK punk for at least laying the groundwork for bands like Wire, PiL, Gang Of Four and so on. But it's a close one!

Since this thread began, I have completely lost the ability to determine what is actually considered punk rock anymore. I just assumed that everybody else considered math rock to be more punk rock, but this may not be the case.

The Exploited just fucking suck. A 3rd tier band if there ever was one. I admit to owning a few things by them, but they got tiresome really quick.The Middle Class (what I've heard anyway) were great.

Black Flag was more important to me than all the UK bands combined.
