Slint gear on Ebay. Uhhh...
Yeah, but an artist's level of popular recognition isn't always what makes them important to people. I'd far rather have something autographed by Clint Conley or Tom Verlaine or Richard Thompson than, say, Jon Bon Jovi or Eddie Van Halen. Though I don't think I'd pay extra for that privilege.
Well, Tom Verlaine's Fender sold for over $20k on Ebay, and it was sold as "Tom Verlaine from Television's Fender!"

I can't say that I'm psyched that this stuff is being sold in this manner, but it is a piece of gear "of particular interest" and somebody might think it was cool to own a piece of gear that was used in their favorite gig, ever. Everybody knows the rules, nothing is being hidden, so it comes down to if-you-don't-like-it-then-don't-participate.
Some people think it's cool to get peed on. I don't, so I don't engage in that sort of thing, but if you like it then "time for your breakfast" and bladders ahoy.

In an auction, the buyer sets the price. That makes it "worth" what the market will bear, even if the "market" is some rich kid in Des Moines who has an Indie fetish.
This isn't like selling potable water at $7 a bottle after a hurricane hits.

To accuse someone of "selling out" is just too easy.

Besides, if I had Pajo's Strat, I'd rip those stupid EMGs out pronto. Guitars shouldn't require batteries.

Timmy Yohannon still lives!

It totally ROCKS to project "proper independent/DIY integrity (as long as it's the kind of integry that exactly fits my vision)" onto people who may not care for it...

Now i'm going to go back to my dusty MRRs from the late 80s and read Ben Weasel rip on Husker Du for being classic-rock-sounding sellouts and clench my fist going "YEAH!".
"Pro Tools is too California Hollywood bullshit.”
