Apparently there’s also a bunch of fake Shure SM7Bs out there as well?

The Fake Shure thing is super real. Not just SM57 and SM7b, but weird mics like Beta87, Beta91's and KSM9.

I don't get the Sony 800 thing. All the references to its use seem to be 90's hip hop and R&B and refer to how bright and in your face it is. Nothing I'm looking for in a mic especially a second rate knock off.

Give me something U87 esque, or 47fet ish.

It'd be fun to have a studio with exactly one gold mic like this and make bands defend their right to use it. "Are you REALLY the best...?? hmmm..." "Tell me why you need supremely clear midrange. I'll wait"

That’s definitely something you build a rap studio around.

I dunno... I could see it being a useful thing to have around. I'm very often recording very soft vocals and can see this type of thing working well. Probably great on nylon string guitars and soft instruments too and at 650... That's a pretty fucking good deal. I've used a grip of Warm mics and every one has been kinda great. I think their Fet 47 Jr is a great mic for a mic that can be gotten sub $200. I use mine on kick a lot. The gold... Dogecoins mutha fucka! Get rich! It's hilarious.

I think you're right insofar as every mic will eventually become useful if you record different people and different sounds. It's really a question of how often you need to use something to justify having it vs what's the almost every session selections.
