It's like the helicopter chase scene from Goodfellas for 2.5 hours. Nice to see PTA engaging in a world not fully filled with dudes (I value his films about nearly anyone else's, but it's usually a lot of duuuuuuuuudes). Gonna see it again. A scene towards the end was something I haven't seen before, and it was the only time I've ever felt a difference in seeing something in Imax.
We have a dedicated C/NC if you're interested in discussing further.

Rewatched PTA's The Master for the first time since it was in theaters, to get hyped for seeing One Battle next weekend. I feel like I still don't totally "get" it, but I liked it even more than after that single viewing 13 years ago. TOTALLY forgot that Rami Malek and Jesse Plemons were in this! Real fucking shame we never got another PTA film with PSH.

Question: assuming Freddie Quell is telling the truth that he slept with his aunt, are we assuming that he hadn't slept with another woman since then until the last scene in the movie?

Sinners! Great film. Some really engaging magical realism sections, especially the music part. Like RLM I actually preferred the first non-vampire third of the film.

Solid.

I don't "get" this film either. It's good and has some amazing scenes, but "best of the decade"? (the AV Club), get outta here.
"Whatever happened to that album?"
"I broke it, remember? I threw it against the wall and it like, shattered."

Finally saw Weapons. We loved it. I didn't know what to expect other than that general premise from the preview.

[SPOLIER]

I liked that it wasn't just some big conspiracy or eminent evil, but a simple story about a witch. There's a lot of implying rather than straight exposition. I liked that not everything was explained, because the little details like that seemed beside the point. Leaving things open for interpretation as if you were a resident in the neighborhood was refreshing.

The violence was brutal. I didn't mind it, even when it was over the top. There was a lot of humor to be found, even though the premise was scary.

A Better Tomorrow and City on Fire were both fun. A Better Tomorrow 2 is okay but has Chow Yun Fat play his previously unknown about twin which is always a fun trope. I liked em all about as much as the Killer or Hard Boiled.
Violent Cop and Boiling Point were both good. Outrage, Beyond Outrage, and Outrage Coda are all kinda schlocky one note Yakuza movies, alright but not Takeshi's best.
It's been like 10 years since I've seen Sonatine so might give that one a spin soon, I recall it being excellent.

Adding to the PTA rewatch (after catching One Battle last weekend) I saw Magnolia in whole for the first time in a real real real long time. I loved it when it came out (saw it opening weekend in early '00!) but after seeing OBAA it definitely plays like a young man's film. Great performances, camera work, etc, and the "Wise Up" and frog rain sequences still seem like huge swings that totally work, but it's at least 20 minutes too long (even PTA has talked about it being way too long now). Not that I'd want to cut some of the least essential characters (Henry Gibson in the bar) but even if this was tightened up, this just plays different now knowing where he's done since.

Cool connection: the woman plays the journalist who interviews Frank TJ Mackey is in OBAA as Mother Superior.

I could not get into The Master. I felt bored the whole way through. I must've missed something. I generally like PTA, he's an amazing director. I look forward to seeing his latest. I missed Licorice Pizza, been meaning to see that. I couldn't tell what it was about, it seemed like it would be kin to Dazed and Confused.

OK, so I was just reading about this. There was a film with similar premise about an awkward girl (the Craig character, basically) trying to "fit in." Can anyone remind me what this was called? IIRC it was a non-english film. Friendship seriously sounds like a masculine remake of the one I'm looking for years. I don't like Paul Rudd nor Craig Robinson, so I'll be skipping that one.
