What the fuck is going on in Pakistan?

When I find some development in the Middle East baffling or beyond my limited scope of information, I go to Juan Cole's blog to try and sort it out.

Juan Cole wrote:With Benazir's assassination, the Rice Plan is in tatters and Bush administration policy toward Pakistan and Afghanistan is tottering.

Here's why I read him:

Juan Cole's CV wrote:Juan R. I. Cole is Richard P. Mitchell Distinguished University Professor of History at the University of Michigan. He has written extensively about Egypt, Iran, Iraq, and South Asia. He has given numerous media and press interviews on the War on Terrorism since September 11, 2001, as well as concerning the Iraq War and the building conflict with Iran from 2003. He has a regular column at Salon.com. He continues to study and write about contemporary Islamic movements, whether mainstream or radical, whether Sunni and Salafi or Shi`ite. Cole commands Arabic, Persian and Urdu and reads some Turkish, knows both Middle Eastern and South Asian Islam, and lived in a number of places in the Muslim world for extended periods of time. For three decades, he has sought to put the relationship of the West and the Muslim world in historical context, and his most recent book is Napoleon's Egypt: Invading the Middle East

That seems like a good read - well-written and certainly well-informed. I'll be visiting his site more often - thanks for that. Sometimes Middle Eastern affairs are damn hard to keep up with.

He went to bed about a decade ago, or whenever he sold his soul to the bankers and the elites.

Fogive me if I'm not really up to date on this story but its seems that lots of peeps are trying to over-rationalize this event...

Why isn't/coudn't the explanation be that Musharraf, Mr. Pakistan Military himself, and his cronies cooked this thing up simply to eliminate the opposition with who he may have had to share power?
D. Perino deduced: "The Cuban Missile Crisis?...“It had to do with Cuba and missiles, I’m pretty sure.”

I'd recommend the above article to anyone interested in more insight with regards to "what the fuck is going on in Pakistan". I went on to read this earlier article on the anniversary. Together they are horrifying and amusing by turn, full of incestuous machinations, comically backfiring plots, fratricide, betrayal, astounding greed, bad taste and dumbassed politicking. Ali was at one time close to the Bhuttos, so it is in part an insider's account.

Earlier today, I read that "Benazir Bhutto was feted as a symbol of modernity"; this appears true, but not in the fashion that lionisers maintain. That her death feels so catastrophic is in itself tragic.

Edit: On a more absurd note, I see that one of the few tributes up on the BBC page is from Cleo Rocas. You know, the big-breasted sidekick of Kenny Everett.

I was just pointed to this interview with Bhutto by David Frost from November 2, 2007- after the first assassination attempt. Do not miss this. At the 5:00 minute mark, she goes into the al Qaeda/ISI/CIA financing network. Bhutto casually refers to 'the man who killed Osama Bin Laden'. WTF?? Is she talking about Omar Sayeed Shiekh?? David Frost never followed up. If she was in possession of info on the Arab Emmanuel Goldstein being dead, then of course she had to go.

That is crazy - how did Frost not follow up on that?
