I don't know any meat eaters who feel at all threatened by vegans or egetarians.

I imagine some folk who work for HUntingdon Life Sciences feel a bit threatened but that's another thread.

I think a lot get annoyed by vocal veggies for the same reason that non christians get annoyed at evangelical christians

Earwicker, that's a disgraceful and lazy stereotype, more suited to the hunt-sabbing crusty anarcho vegan rabble which account for around 0.0002% of non-meat eaters. You're brighter than that.

May I ask when you last encountered one? If you had bothered to read those other pages in the thread you might have also picked up that the 'preachy' veggie is also something of a myth, most being happy to quietly get on with eating whatever they choose while occasionally deflecting flak and belligerent clichés about leather shoes and anaemia.

I don't agree. Veggies etc have made (usually) a choice based entirely on their consideration for the wellbeing of others (animals). This choice impinges on their intake of sustenance on a daily, hourly basis.

I don't think that this type of altruism has many (if any) mainstream parallels.

Absolute refusal to buy/sell/use/financially support child labour/sweatshop labour in any way would be a parallel in terms of personal political acts, but how many people commit to that on a serious basis?

A veggie has taken an individual, meaningful stand for what he/she believes in and I genuinely believe that a significant part of western society finds it frightening. If I am wrong (as you imply) what possible reason do meat-eaters have for their endlessly tiresome berating of veggies?

I should point out that I am not a veggie, although I have been at various stages of my life.

I wasn't meaning to suggest all Veggies are ALF activists.
The above is a statement born from my presumption that all ALF activists are veggies (and it was meant to be taken light heartedly).
Who knows - maybe not all ALF activists are veggies.

I've not met a 'militantly' vocal veggie since university.
But they aren't 'a myth'

My point was in reference to a suggestion that meat eaters feel threatened by Veggies and I don't think they do. I was trying to explain (glibly, I admit) why I think vegetarians misinterpret the reactions of some meat eaters as those of someone who feels threatened.

Or rather why some meat eaters might behave in a manner that could be misinterpreted that way. I think it's to do with a presumption (that may largely be false) that vegetarians have placed themselves on some kind of moral pedestal. Like Christians.

I don't think that personally BTW.

Though get me on a conversation about animal testing for medical reasons and then my back will get up.

In fact - come to think of it that is another thread worth starting if it hasn't already been.

You can certainly find militant vegans on line rather quickly. I used to see their stuff all the time on anarchist forums. They do not form even close to a majority of vegans, they are just the most vocal. I suspect a lot of them are much more vocal on line rather than in person, as they are probably scrawny little fucks who would get beat up quickly if they shot their mouths off. (just kidding)

Soy milk and apple juice? That's it? I'm betting they didn't run that one by a doctor, or even anyone else who may have been sympathetic to what they were trying to do.

It's astounding how ignorant people can be.
