are we doing this by weight of gear?
or weight of band?

THE HEAVIEST BAND EVER

The first time I heard the song Arsonaut I listened to it 3 times in a row, even though it's 10+ minutes long.

THE HEAVIEST BAND EVER
125After all the drooling over Electric Wizard I finally listened to Come My Fanatics from start to finish.
Nope. Not the heaviest. Lots of bottom end and fuzz but a bit too light of a touch on the drumming. Dale Crover would use this guy's sticks as toothpicks after a fine chicken dinner. Maybe it's a different story with the live show.
Perhaps we ought to be considering only live performances when judging heaviness. My old band had 6 guitarists and 2 bassists but listening to our records you would never know it.

126I saw Torche play last night and they were pretty fucking heavy. Their drummer plays like he's a psycho trying to beat somebody to a pulp.
it's not the length, it's the gersch

And he wears Blasphemy tshirts. He bows down to the satanic skins.
THE HEAVIEST BAND EVER
129I think Harvey Milk probably wins. The vocals alone make them heavier than almost anyone. Eyehategod is pretty heavy too.
THE HEAVIEST BAND EVER
130Iron Monkey's a great nomination. Criminally overlooked band.
Torche are devastating live. One of my favorite live acts, as a matter of fact. But their records aren't uniformly and unrelentingly heavy enough for them to keep up with the likes of High On Fire and Bongzilla in this thread.
