Good pop songs from the last 30 years

Holy Balls! I just remembered Out Hud.

It was actually a side-project of the risible !!! dudes but somehow it was insanely great. Sort of like an odd combination of electronica, baggy and chamber music. They released one really really great album called 'Let Us Never Speak of It Again' and then split immediately afterwards. If you like pop music, you should find this album.

There's a couple of great MP3s here to see if it grabs your fancy -

In fact, i'm going to link to this as I quite like the idea of it causing some 'guilt wank' action. Y'know, over the Ramones t-shirt.

I think the only thing that could make this piece of shit any worse was if some bearded guy was playing a harmonium and going "Ohhhhhhhhh!"

Sort of like this?

I don't know if it is among the best of the last thirty years but this seemed the most appropriate place to post this.

'Handle Me' by Robyn has been all over the radio in the UK over the last couple of weeks and I kind of love it and kind of hate it. I think the verses are completely inspired, and like the end of each chorus, but the big boombastic 'Handle Me' bits in the chorus leave me kind of cold. If they'd kept the minimalist, cello-drug verses to the fore I'd like this a lot more. Yet, I can't get the verses off my mind of late.

Me too. The cello sounds great. Wonder how they got that sound? Like they recorded it on a dictaphone and put it through a compressor or something? I love it's 'graininess'...maybe they just pushed down hard with the bow, as per George Martin's instructions on 'Eleanor Rigby'. Or it could just be a sample.

Not so keen on the song however. Robyn stinks a bit of 'Pink', which surely cannot be a good thing.

How long are we going to have to wait for the new Annie album to come out anyway?

I've worked out where they got that sound from. It's like Ivor Cutler. Just imagine Cutler intoning those lyrics "I heard about that guy you beat pretty bad and got in the papers..." and the song becomes much better.
