Fuck... thinking about it, I think I recall Old Shatterhand taking a grizzly with a knife, and totally beating bear's ass. Maybe he shot grizzly in the eye prior to that? I need to read that book again.
So it's ok to pull a knife on a bear, but only if you're good enough.
