Re: Reaper for assholes

I've done all my hisss Reapering on my Windows desktop, and I want to bring my session including the plugins I use onto my laptop so I can bring it to a studio have it on hand for reference if needed.
There's plugins installed in various locations because some of them just automatically install where-ever the hell they want. I only have a couple that are licensed, partially for this kind of reason.

Anyone keen to a nice way to 'package' an environment? yes yes, being more organized up front, but still?

In the old VST2 days you could mostly just copy your VST folder and almost everything would work. These day almost everything has some sort of installer or management software and will not work unless you go through that process. The only way I know of to guarente all your plugins will work is to install then on the new machine as recommended. After that everything should be fine. It's an absolute pain in the ass dealing with plugins and they make it harder every day.

I'm just going to write lists of plugins and the general settings ("silo mountain reverb, 12540 ms" ) on loose leaf paper and hastily shove it in a bag.
If you are happy with the plugin settings and don't feel like you want to tweak them anymore, you can bounce out stems and make a new project, that won't rely on them when opened. I do this all the time. I'll also bounce out all the wet reverb sends and shit so I can blend them in as needed. A friend of mine actually does all his effects, all of them, on sends so he can freeze them out to take other places. I just work with stems. I also will burn FX to audio and delete the plugin all the time. I like burning bridges. Once I make a VST synth part and get eh sound I like, I burn it to audio and delete the midi track and plugin. It's done. I don't need to fuck with it anymore.

Yeah that’s totally the way to go - I would do that right now but I know the place I’m going has better sounding plugins/uses them more effectively. If I know the general vibe I was going for I can at least articulate it to Big Powerful, Alex Jacobelli

Otherwise I was just going to glue everything and dump the wavs, but I figure there might be crossfades etc. that the guy I'm working with might want to see/fix

I assumed it was a no go but looks like there are maybe some options but I'm sure some suck more than others
Honestly, I'd just see if I could install reaper on the studi ino computer. If not. Just bounce stems or tracks out. Do your stuff and take files back into reaper. Bounce out at start of project or at a designated marker to align easily.
I'm back for more - I've never gone from Reaper to something else. Is there any way to render stems & midi from a starting point, pre-fader pre-fx?

Or do you have to render WAV stems as 'Mono' and then export Midi separately (talking the midi files themselves)?

What I'm trying to do is bring all my Reaper tracks into protools, with my Midi drums, and use the Pro Tools setup plugins with my original files - and have everything line up when I drop the stems/midi in

This guy has a good method. I use the render matrix.

Slowly losing my mind with this problem. I have a mic that I can hear through my Shure x2u USB interface.
The correct audio device is selected in settings, I can hear the mic in the headphones, but the meter doesn't move at all, and no audio is recorded. The meter seems to be the big issue? I dunno. I can see the meters moving in the track I'm trying to sing over, but nothing I've done gets the audio I can hear onto the track.

Spent hours on the reaper forums, and the terms I am using don't seem to pull up more than just the track basics, which I believe I have done correctly.
Just trying to do a simple vocal overdub, and am losing the battle.

Thanks for the help.

I've had that happen a couple of times, and I think it has to do with mic/device permissions settings. You're on a Mac, right? If you've done any system updates lately it's possible the permissions box was unchecked. System Preferences > Security IIRC.

Another possibility is some interfaces require an app to be turned on, even if it's just in the background. My Audient interface requires that I turn the ID app on even if I don't use that specific GUI.
