I’m just gonna get it.

Anybody familiar with their Sta-level, Altec Graphic or Avalon eq? I am not really in a mood to spend a bunch on plugs but I use Sphere hardware and graphic eqs all the time. I think they’re great for making things fit together. And they sound good just doing a single 2 db cut at one frequency. I like the UAD API and Motown graphics as well, but maybe the Kazrog plug would be redundant.

And Sear Sound was home to some Jim O’Rourke productions and had some kind of crazy desk with Avalon modded eqs. Otherwise that brand seems kind of dorky.

Anything else you can’t live without? It better either give me Insignificance or Skip Spence’s Oar. Nothing in between.

Kazrog Red is ok. It’s like a cross between an LA2A and a 176. Right now I have it on a vocal send, drum bus, bass, and steel string acoustic guitar.

It’s super great at bringing things forward when things get busy, that is probably the most notable thing about it. Otherwise you know what it does and can probably see it coming from a mile away. Does not have the Fairchild fairy dust.

Anyways, I dunno, I could have gotten an Electrodyne or Omnipressor or Unfairchild plugin that sounds more fun but it would have bugged me until I bought this thing.

I also got the UAD Little Labs VOG since it went native as I had been wanting one for forever. It really can make carve out space between the kick and bass fairly quickly. $50 seems expensive for this thing but I bet I will use it tons. Something like this I would actually like to see a comparison between the hardware and plug.

I wish they would do the Cooper Time Cube next, that’s the Gimme Danger delay.

I have the Altec and the Avalon 747. The 747 is a good mix bus comp/eq. sounds good if you drive it a little. I just cant get into graphic style eqs while mixing ITB. It always seems severe. It's hard to not just use Fab Filter anytime I need any kind of EQ especially since I have it bound to a hot key and can launch it so fast. I use Arturias STA Level a lot. Like it. True Iron and True Dynamics are where it is at with Kazrog. K Klip is also very good.

Really into Pulsar’s trident plugin.

The API and Helios channel strips are some of my most used plugins when I need to make something fit a certain way and i feel like this one takes that up a level. I always record with the intention of not having to fuck with any of that shit but of course overdubs can throw all that out of wack. So that drum sound needs some help all the sudden.

The UAD Helios is probably the best as far as ‘box tone’ - it has a characteristic sound that reminds me of these little AML germanium neve preamps - but it doesn’t always work on everything and the Trident is voiced a little more neutrally, except the interface feels like expensive and modern.

My first nice mic preamp was the Daking, which are also based on the OG Tridents but i never had one with eq. Wish I would have been able to use the Poseidon and it at the same time, I’m sure it would have ruled.

By the way, word to the wise Dakings are super nice and have tons of feature incl. a 20 hz + variable high pass filter that I got spoiled on.

I haven’t messed with the drive very much, but the Poseidon feels relatively neutral compared to the Helios.

The API does a thing but it has so many features and the metering doesn’t compare to the Poseidon at all.

Reminds me that I need to get Plugin Dr going at some point to see what all this stuff does because I do not get the same effect as I get from running a pre-recorded track into a BAE or whatever set to unity gain.

My testing hasn’t been exactly scientific, but I haven’t heard of a bunch of people on the internet running audio through plugins at unity just to make them sound better. Because I’m not sure it does.
