Where is music heading?

There are so many good points here.
I feel like instinctively falling into the more cynical side of this. I remember 13 or so years ago going into those constant and predictable music nazi rants about how everything great and truly fresh was being systematically sucked up and ruined. After the time has gone by, I still feel this way, and I think we're currently feeling the effects of it. I don't know how else to describe it....
It feels like there was a flip at some point. Before the flip, it seemed like the mass media tried to keep up with what was really going on (the term 'underground' can be inserted here). Now, it feels like mass media actually dictates what the underground aspires to become.
That aside, I have to give credit to a band like the White Stripes because even in the enourmous position they found themselves in, they still tried to keep it at least somewhat provertially real, if you will.
