I work in legal administration for two attorneys, one of them who deals in family law. I do this shit all the time. And I don't like it.

One thing is clear: those who are able to pay child support but do not are the lowest of the low. And they're not all poor slobs, either. One guy we went after was a financial advisor pulling down nearly six figures. I wanted to punch the guy myself and all I did was the paperwork to force him to go in front of the judge to explain himself. The week he did in jail was worth it.

Rachael, if there is a child support order in place, you can file a motion yourself (the Friend of the court has the forms) to have him "show cause" as to why he should not be thrown in the can for non-payment. If he doesn't show up, a bench warrant is usually issued.

If there is no order for him to pay child support, then there should be one. The Friend of the Court will be able to dock his wages, take his tax refund, and otherwise pursue collection against him.

If you don't want to do it yourself or can't afford a lawyer (obviously), check with your state bar association to get the info for pro bono attorneys or organizations in your area. They might be able to help.

Re: Parental rights: In Michigan, a parent must have not supported or visited with the child for two years before his/her parental rights can be terminated. State statutes vary.

There are many ways available to avoid having kids till you are sure you want them and are wth someone you are sure wants them too.

I would think waiting to have a kid till you are DEAD SURE the dude is not the type who is gonna pull this nonsense under any circumstance would be top priority for women.

Just like women trick guys into thinking they don't have to worry about the kid issue 'oh I'm on the pill' or what have you and then, turns out they wern't and guess what 'I have decided you are going to have a kid with me'
