Sigh. Oh, this show. I remember the day. June 30th. It figures heavily into something I contributed to a documentary that will be coming out soon that many of you on EA are anticipating. I have no idea if my story will be used or released, which is fine either way. If I find out it's not, I'll tell the story on why this show was a big memory for me.
Aside from that, this show was one of the best ever. This was my first time seeing The Ex, long overdue, and wow... just fucking wow. Vern walked by me later and said "man, why were we allowed to play with these guys?"
It was kinda one of the last shows they did. Their official last shows were in April 2002 in Seattle and then Olympia for the very final one. I was on a road trip so I missed these.
However, I caught the final Yo Yo A Go Go in late summer 2001 where Unwound ended the entire shebang and that was great. Very different crowd. Mostly friends and family. All four members (Brandt Sandeno was part of the live group at that point) wore matching suits each a different pastel color, a la Partridge family. Brandt took over drums and they did "Rising Blood" as an encore while Sara stood up and just whacked random cymbals circulating the drum set around Brandt. That was the last Unwound show I saw, and I'm really glad this was the one.

Unwound never put out a bad record or single. I'm not so much on the Leaves tip as much as I used to, although I think it's a very fitting swan song, and the live versions of these songs were tops. If they had released a Live Leaves release, that would have been so excellent. Ah well.
