Would we have had an African American who was major contender for the presidency before now?
I'm only skimming off the top of what could have been.

According to
this show, in a few instances, local governments turned to the major drug dealers and criminals to help deal with the outrage over MLK's death.
This is kind of mind blowing that the very people killing his followers were also the ones asked to help quell the rioting.
