23I need to stop reading this thread because y'all seem to want to talk a bit too much about the plot.

But he doesn't. Disney owns it now. Nice to see that they haven't crapped it up (yet), though.
Disney owns, but it's a strict distribution model. I don't think that they have any creative control whatsoever. I'm sure everyone knows if they did, then the Pixar movies would suck. Why try to control something that consistently delivers box office hits with good plots, beautiful animation and great execution? Disney is happy (and lucky) to have their logo in the beginning of the movie, especially considering the turds they litter the G and PG rated motion picture landscrape with.
The best Pixar films still don't touch the golden age of Disney.

25The best thing Disney has ever had their fingers in.
I loved everything about this movie. I was really worried they would ruin it by giving the robots too much dialog but they made it exactly sparse enough to not hate the characters. Even the roach sidekick was tasteful.
The old lady and I really liked the idea of an alternate ending where it fades to black just after he runs over the roach at the end and never re-gains his soul. Just goes back to crushing trash.
It was a perfectly watchable G-rated film which is an extremely rare phenomenon.

That would be an awesome and apt ending.

It's strange that you would mention the politial/socioeconomical message, all of the critic's reviews I've read said that the movie was pretty much apolitical and light on that kind of thing.
the movie is set on earth after we've destroyed it and been forced to a different planet, where we're enslaved by big corporations.
how could anyone say that's apolitical?
Fred Willard even says "stay the course!" in that classified message. This movie was practically unapologetically political.
Oh yeah, and NOT CRAP.

29Saw it today. It's a great movie. Not one thing I did not like about it.
I've seen the bridges burning in the night.

30Just got back from seeing it.... that was the most fun I've had at the movies... ever.
And that will probably be the last time I ever say that. I feel dirty having said it.
But damn. It says a lot that so many PG-13/R movies aren't as fun as this simple G-rated movies. And so much work they put into these films.. lush, detailed landscapes, characters that we CARE about, even if they are hunks of metal, be it rusty and dirty or slick and shiny.
They owe a lot to Looney Tunes, Short Circuit (but this movie was more imaginative, and at the same time a lot more poignant and LESS PREACHY than Short Circuit ultimately was) and a few other robot/space movies.
