Who started calling the underground the "monorail"? I've never heard anyone call it that.

There's always the alternative that was suggested if it is sunny; get buckled and sit in Kelvingrove park. There should be some enterntainment.

underground/clockwork orange = glasgow underground tube train system

I'll second recommendations for the Wee Curry Shops ( Ashton Lane or Byres Road), Mother India is also good. Ashton Lane is generally a bit full of douchebags for my tastes. The pubs are generally expensive and crap, with the notable exception of the 'Wee Bar at the Chip'. The associated restaurant 'The Ubiquitious Chip' is probably the best in the West End, but is a little bit pricey.

Byres Road is probably your best bet for coffee places - Kember & Jones and Peckhams are both nice - Offshore in Gibson Street is meant to be good, as is the afore-mentioned Tchai-Ovna. There's also the inevitable Starbucks, Costa, and a UK chain called 'Beanscene'.

Kelvinggrove museum is great, and free. The Botanics (top of Byres Road) are really nice, but depending on the weather may be full of pissed-up students and neds (http://www.glasgowsurvival.co.uk/)

Sleazy's isn't quite the same since the refurb - the Variety is probably the best pub in that part of town now. The CCA bar is nice, ruined only by occasionally terrible bar-tending. (all these bars are on Sauchiehall St - it can be a bit of a warzone at kicking-out time).

West End wise there's a great pub called The Belle on Great Western Road, near the top of Byres Rd, and there's a few nice pubs and bars on Gibson St and Woodlands Rd.
