You know Joel waaaaaaay better than I do, obviously, but in my owning nearly all of the recorded output I have, I'd describe his sax playing with words like lyrical, exquisite, moving, rich, etc. I'm thinking mainly of the sax on 3, one of my favorite albums of all time, btw. I have to take a stand here and say that sax has no business in rock. Especially sax solos. It ruins Blue Thunder. Case in point- Morphine. Morphine is a terrible band.

he is shit-hot in the way you suggest, but i meant it re his ability in general

he always seemed like a complete natural on saxophone. i mean, i think he's a very fine guitarist, as well, but he could just pour it out on sax, and he never sounded cheesy the way many saxophonists inevitably do at times.

1. Oil Tasters. Inspirational Sax-Bass-Drums power trio from Milwaukee - Hank Rollins WAS going to reissue it, they couldn't find the tapes, then the label went under.

Lizard, Islands, and Red have some astounding reed action.

Since I cannot be the first to say X-Ray-Spex, I will say Naked Raygun instead. When it is good it is good.

the sax coming in in the middle of "1970" is one of the best goddamned things i've ever heard in my life...and of course there's the many other bands already mentioned like The Contortions, X-Ray Spex, etc...

but for the clarinet? The Electric Eels...and there you have it...

Didier Malherbe provides some pretty hot sax for Gong. Check out 'Sold to the Highest Buddha' on Angel's Egg. Flying Teapot has some great saxophone /guitar interplay. I think he also played the flute for Gong. Perhaps flutes in rock is a whole new thread.

I know Gong might be alot of peoples prog nightmare but I love them.

Lol Coxhill did a lot of the soprano sax playing for Kevin Ayers, Soft Machine etc. I've seen him play recently a few times. He does an amazing Ornette Coleman/Coltrane/Ayler medley.
