I agree with you there. Not amazing, but I like it. I know a lot of fans of David Lynch and even some of them really don't like Wild at Heart.
Big David Lynch fan, and Wild at Heart is DEFINITELY in my top 3 Lynch films.

Wild at Heart is possibly in my top 10 all time. Don't understand why you wouldn't like it. I think Nic Cage is perfect for that role.

There’s a perception that Wild at Heart distracted him from Twin Peaks, and that’s why the series quality took a nosedive during the middle of the second season. Not true at all - the timelines for filming it don’t line up - but it’s still a thing people say.
Some people just don’t like it, though. That’s not me, in case that wasn’t clear. I really like it, have seen it in a theater many times. I just don’t think it’s either drop dead amazing or abjectly terrible, so the actors in it don’t meet the game’s criteria for me.

Yeah, Wild at Heart distracting him from Twin peaks is a silly notion. I think a lot of people "accidently" get into Lynch with something like Mulholland Drive or Lost Highway, then go backwards expecting neo-noir and Trent Reznor soundtracks.
Lynch had practically nothing to do with the second season. According to him the first season was way off the rails and out of his hands before he left to work on Wild at Heart.

I absolutely cannot stand this movie.
I think Lynch had his brush with greatness, but seems to say "fuck it" halfway through most of his films. Would have been a great director of photography if his career had gone differently. Anyway, I think Wild at Heart is the one where he said "fuck it" a few minutes in. It just has this childish improv quality all over it. It's as if the glove from season 3 of Twin Peaks got to write a movie.

Hot take, but I couldn't disagree more.
To me its easily one of his least compromising, least "fuck it" pieces of work.
Going see it on a big screen this week!
