NC.
Also, I'll always give props to Godspeed You! Black Emperor for inviting him to play a UK ATP when they first got back together, apparently one of the first times Al had ever played across the pond!
Re: C/NC: Weird Al Yankovic
22I can understand a grown adult not being into comedy song parody but for kids, it is the best. My sister and I used to jam out Al all the time when we were kids and it was a blast. Nostalgia, maybe. As I grew older I sort of dismissed him and was sort of irritated by the idea of what he did, but when I was in my mid twenties, a friend and I got drunk and went on a youtube fest of his videos and we had a blast. It wasn't nostalgia, we generally just had a great time cracking up at stupid jokes. Some of his songs are legit funny and his execution is perfect. Dare to be Stupid is a perfect Devo song that Devo never did. Mr. Frump and his Iron Lung is fantastic. Someone has to live in this space musically and I can't imagine anyone doing a better job of it.

23I guess one could vote Crap if they take life too seriously. Not me.
Glad to see the love for UHF here. Maybe some of the jokes haven’t aged well but dammit I will still laugh my ass off at “SUPPLIES!!!!”

Never seen this episode, but it seems a little too apropos for this audience.
Re: C/NC: Weird Al Yankovic
25Interesting. I had no idea. I suppose the Portuguese disagree and that's why Saudade is still celebrated?biscuitdough wrote: Wed Oct 06, 2021 9:57 amI like a good, comforting dose of pablum from my childhood now and then. It's important not to make a big deal of it, but that goes for any lonely nonsense that keeps you removed from the rest of humanity. This applies to intellectual and niche interests in general. I say this on an indie rock and record collector forum!enframed wrote: Tue Oct 05, 2021 10:17 pm Nostalgia is a malignant disease and parody is the opiate that keeps it alive.
Your post was so succinct and well-put that I wasn't sure if you were quoting something, so I did a quick search and found this. Apparently it really was considered a mental illness.
Also, thanks. I used to play around with the aphorism as a literary form. Now and again a decent one is wrung out.
Re: C/NC: Weird Al Yankovic
26On the nerdier side of the spectrum for sure, but Not Crap. Am no Weird Al buff but it's especially great when he takes a more or less dumb song (e.g. "Blurred Lines") and renders something cool from it.
Re: C/NC: Weird Al Yankovic
27Apparently Mark Mothersbaugh also said it was "the best Devo song that Devo never did" so you're not alone there. Devo parody is pretty much the same thing as Devo original, as it turns out.Kniferide wrote: Dare to be Stupid is a perfect Devo song that Devo never did.

28Guy seems a nice decent bloke.
But never found him funny. Except for that Eat it video.

Re: C/NC: Weird Al Yankovic
29I'm about as negative, cynical & jaded as a person can get but the idea of thinking Weird Al is crap is absurd.
