Really enjoy three of their albums quite a lot (White Pony, Ohms and the one with the flamingos on the cover).

Not Crap. Not sure I'll ever get to see them live, but I bet I'd enjoy it a lot.
This woulda been summer/fall '95.

They had the opening slot on a Anthrax/Life Of Agony bill...

They went way out of their way to ask the Anthrax crowd if they were into Weezer before going into "Say It Ain't So". I've seen some bands get stuff chucked at them before, but that Anthrax crowd was like Philly fans with a pillowcase full of batteries. Now, I've seen some versions since that day but they Hulked out slower and more completely at that show then I've ever seen in any other instance. By the end of that tune, they had earned the begrudging respect of that Anthrax crowd.

I liked them a lot before that, but they kinda stole my heart with that one.

Yeah nothing says "fun music" like a goth-adjacent band covering a Smiths ballad.

+1

Also, I maintain that at least what I remember of Deftones reminds me of Smashing Pumpkins. It's probably the singer; a little bit of the guitar in the sections preceding the verses of this song as well. If that makes it seem like I lived off-planet for a while, so be it.

EDIT: the singer's quieter, higher phrases (not the screamy bits) also remind me of Craig Wedren.

i still really enjoy the first record even though it is kind of lazy.

they did the best Drive Like Jehu cover I've ever heard. possibly better than the original.

Was in a tattoo shop a few weeks back and the cover of The Smiths please please.... came on the radio. Dude that owns the shop looked at me as I had a really confused look on my face and said "You've never heard Deftones?"

"Nope, only know the name. This cover sucks though."

That's all I got. It was a boring version of a great song,

Considering the amount of weed the man consumes hardly surprising.

I’m someone that broadly “likes” Deftones, I think I have everything on vinyl… seen them a bunch including special shows. It’s popular music, at times fantastic within that Overton Window. But I can go for months without listening to them.

Recently I’ve struggled with the surrounding shit. Stef is a QAnon loon and Chino seems have treated Sergio Vega like shit after years in the band… he was never made a member despite four albums and when COVID hit got his “pay” pulled an referred to as an “expensive” by Chino.

Shit like that grates.

If you care to look it up, they are on record as being big Pumpkins fans and cite them as an influence, even performing with them.
