Reddit is a website I end up at when I search “how do I adjust the water pressure on X boiler” and a link to Reddit is first

Not crap but getting crappier.

Some really funny stuff on it occasionally.

Technical subreddits have occasionally been a life saver. Similar to the vacuum story, I had someone tell me how to program a Panasonic SMD tape feeder that I was using standalone to feed a robot. There are no manuals for this anywhere.

r/PLC is overall, fantastic and full of professionals

This makes sense. It seems like it would work well for cataloguing arcane boiler info DIY stuff, asking for additional help. That said, I did use the MIDI subreddit, searched first to see if my question had been already answered to no avail. I then asked a question and received incomplete and seemingly frustrated help that was soon buried in favor of new questions.

Go into a subreddit on lightweight hiking apparel or projectors or guitar pickups and it's a bit better (still lots posting the same questions though).
Cool, thanks for the confirmation. I guess I was expecting some kind of evolution of the internet forum, but I feel like it's instead regressive. But probably my fault as people seem to love the approach.

True. I get cooking tips this way. Recently found out there are lots of UAP subs. The trick will be finding the serious one.

Excuse me?
I'm hoping there's some irony or sarcasm in this statement.
I cut my Internet and computing teeth on something called PLATO IV, while employed at UIC, circa 1980's. My interest in using PLATO is what led me, ultimately, to a career in IT; Tech Support, Networking, and ultimately BAS (Building Automation Systems).

I'm a redditor, after Usenet/Netnews finally drifted into obsolescence. Took me a long time to get used to it. But, I finally like it. The chicago subreddits are either interesting or infuriating, but there ya go. Lots of niche subreddits if you look for them.

Because it’s anonymous and interactive I think Reddit is more psychologically harmful to kids than Facebook or YouTube.
Not to mention the reasons all social media should be avoided until you are mature enough to put it in context of a happy fulfilling life. (Doomscrolling. Nihilism. Perverts.)

Please take this as a statement from a old non-social media participant, so I realize I am WAY behind here, but I'm seriously concerned for our future as a species.
Every music sub....no matter how obscure or the artist being an oldies act is filled with nothing but summaries of Spotify "achievements". Like I listened to 10,000 hours of Spacehog this year or I am in the top 100 of Wheatus listeners. It's like people stopped having complete thoughts and have just moved to grunting, gesticulating, and grabbing their crotch. Am I cooked?

In anything music-related on YT, Reddit, etc., "old heads" will feel the need to state their ages and say "still listening." No one cares, geriatrics!
