We were too bougie for Good Times but I saw a lot of my dad in "James Evans, Sr." We also had a sassy neighbor like "Willona" who was a permanent fixture and literally would enter our home without knocking. I wasn't a follower of Amen but my grandfather, a Reverend, was the leader of a Baptist Church and my grandmother had a religious book store. It would've been nice to reflect the Campbell's on Soap but we weren't nearly as soapy and I was much too young and not fey enough to be Billy Crystal's "Jodie." Far too working class for The Cosby Show but the shenanigans were real.
The pair of episodes where JJ gets shot.
James seeing that the kid who shot JJ didn't have good parents looking out for him, and actually feeling for that kid?
That was absolutely something that I could hear coming out of my old man's mouth. i can even remember a time when he told me that he thought about trying to work out a way to take one of my mom's cousin's sons in because most of his brothers were headed down the wrong road. That kid wound up doing alright, but it was always priceless that the old man was worried about nurture versus nature.
Now, past all of that?
There were some legitimate moments around my dad's family as a kid where I could not tell if Hee Haw was a documentary or not.
