A friend who has dyslexia tells me that comic sans is a font that makes reading and comprehension easier for him and his fellow dyslexics,

I dunno, Arial? I don't pay much attention these days. I'm just a cook who can barely spell or punctuate

This dude fonts.
matttkkkk wrote: Sun Dec 28, 2025 6:20 pm Arial disgusts me since it was changed (awkwardly) so MS didn't have to license Helvetica, whereas Apple just ponied up for the properly designed original.
If you're looking for humanist grotesques (the class to which Helvetica belongs) there are a lot of great ones - Univers, Frutiger, Akzidenz Grotesk, and the lord of them all, Haas Unica.
Other classic sans - Futura, Gill Sans (altho Gill was a pretty disgusting and abusive creep), Optima.
Yes, yes, and yes!
O lord, yeah.

Friends don't let friends use Arial. It's like Behringer.

Hard agree.

I only f/w Courier in my personal life. It causes me great harm to shit out a paper in Courier, reach my page limit, and bounce it to shitty and boring Times New Roman to discover that I've got more room to play with. I like the space Courier provides. Contemplative. Bucolic. Like a retired gunfighter, it is still dangerous.

Fuck you and your dominance in grad school, TNR.

Big fan of grotesques. Franklin Gothic might be the most versatile of them. I'm fond of YWFT Ultramagnetic as an updated take on it.

I'd bought a number of typefaces back in the Postscript Type 1 days, and I've lately been plunking around trying to convert them to .otf. (The .suit file is incredibly annoying to split up. Sheesh.)

Some favorites: GarageFonts District Thin is a good all-purpose when you can get away with a thin line. GF may not exist any longer, though. Barry Deck's Arbitrary is an underrated face. (His Template Gothic was the Font Of The Nineties.)

Worst font? The use of Comic Sans is a tell, but it seems like a cliche to hate on the typeface itself. There are a lot of awful "fun" typefaces out there that are even less readable. It's been a while since I found myself offended by a typeface, though I have been offended by weird distortions of them in signage or grab-all-the-fonts logos.
