There is a place is Portland, Oregon called the Bombay Cricket Club that is magnificent. The owner has uncles that are generals in both the Pakistani and Indian armies, and is a marvelous conversationalist.

The spice options here were mild, medium, medium plus and hot. They wouldn't let you order "hot" unless they knew you. Or hated you, I guess. The medium plus contained two whole habenero peppers in one of those small oval dishes. My ex would always forget the pain of previous visits, and go for it, resulting in long nights of sweating, fever dreams and the dreaded "medium plus butt". There were whimpering noises from the bathroom and other exploding sounds that I don't really understand.

well, I live in Jersey, in the NYC suburbs, and there's a really killer vegetarian South Indian place in Montclair, where my wife and I live. It's called Udupi Village. mmm...Baingan Bartha...Gobi Masala Curry...Palak Paneer...sooooo good.
I've never really had the fire-ass problem with Indian food. I've damn near burned my lips off, but none of this piss shits.
I love Indian food, even more than Thai or Ethiopian.
