Well, considering that they weren't doing it until the police goaded them into it, I'd say it creates crimes rather than preventing them.
Go in a chat room on myspace right now, any chat room. See how they are not doing it right now this very second.

To me, it all looks like a bunch of hype.
From this watchdog site.
•1 in 5 (children) received a sexual solicitation or approach in the last year.
•1 in 33 (children) received an aggressive sexual solicitation (asked to meet, called them via phone, sent mail, money or gifts).
•25% of youth who received a sexual solicitation told a parent.

Hmmm... doesn't exactly look like an objective source to me. An organization like that has a lot to gain by pumping up the statistics, and I couldn't find any info on their website regarding where they got their data.
I don't doubt that kids read sexual talk online. We all know that the #1 topic on the Internet is sex. What I'm wondering is what are the actual crime statistics for sex crimes involving minors that are Internet-related.
There has got to be a police organization that can provide this kind of info.

Law enforcement at all levels made an estimated 2,577 arrests during the 12 months starting at July 1st, 2000, for internet sex crimes against minors.
Of these:
Internet Solicitations to undercover law enforcement posing as minors that involved no identified victims - 25%

Good job, D-zone.
83% had images of children 6-12 years old. 83% percent.
Statutory, my ass.

Well that's a whole other can of worms.
Anybody who regularly visits porn sites on the Internet could "have images" of underage models, even if they never deliberately saved any of them to their hard drive. All you have to do is click a link and load a Web page and all the images will automatically be on your hard drive.

I don't know, dude. I look at my fair share of porn and I'm fairly certain there are no images of 12 year-olds on there. You gotta seek that crap out.
What do you think you're defending here?

It's 83% of the 67% that have child pornography on their computers, as well.
I'm just saying that it's easy to read those statistics and assess them improperly.

14% of all people know that.

No, the difference here is that I read the report and you pulled a number out of thin air.
