That whole Turkish debacle was pretty much the beginning of the end. We're still suffering the consequences to this day. I hope he can live with himself and his blood money.
Fucking hell, you Leeds boys are a hard bunch. He's a footballer and therefore a mercenary, so why be upset at this move? You can't blame a nation for the death of those Leeds fans any more than the French can blame the entire United Kingdom for the death of the two French students killed recently.
No, you're right, that's why my reaction is pretty much - "sigh - fuck off, then, Harry" - and that's it. Move to Turkey, by all means, I understand it is a lovely country populated by great people. There is no problem with Turkey. Galatasaray? Bit close to the bone. It's also a bit weird. If I'd have experienced the armed guard to get the Leeds players - Kewell included - onto the pitch that night, and the poisonous, unrepentant atmosphere in the stadium that night (Galatasaray supporters making 'cut-throat' gestures, etc), I'd just cross the idea of ever playing there off my list. But I ain't a footballer, I guess.
It goes both ways, too.
Here, for example, where it's not long before a picture of Leeds' new kit doesn't last long before a Galatasaray fan weighs in. Pointless, really pointless.
Edit: and I'd add, the lack of remorse, from, well, anyone has been a factor in keeping this going. UEFA washed their hands of it as the incident happened outside the stadium, so "was not football related". Galatasaray's players refused to wear black armbands. The case has dragged through the courts for years. When Besiktas came to Elland Road six months later they brought an on-pitch flower tribute and observed a minute's silence, which was appreciated since the whole thing was fuck-all to do with them. That Galatasaray have consistly acted as if the whole thing was fuck-all to do with
them, either, sticks in the throat.
It's all just sad, really. Perhaps Leeds fans should be acting more maturely about this, but it was fairly easy to see that they wouldn't. When I was told about this transfer at work, my only reaction was to hit my forehead with the heel of my hand. I think that sums up the way I feel about this one. I just wish Harry Kewell had reached the same obvious conclusion.
Now, anyone want to discuss Ronaldo, Blatter, and
modern slavery?
