Won't know unless you measure the rail voltages and see if they're within spec of what the original transformer would have produced.

The speaker is going to have the biggest impact on sound, and what you've got in there now is probably a cheap stereo speaker, which is why it sounds shrill. Definitely get a guitar speaker in there.

To elaborate on what Nate said, this is a solid state amp and the transformer is a power transformer to convert wall voltage to what the amp wants to see. It is not an impedance (ohms) matching transformer like a tube amp would have.
