You certainly are not.

i.e. if a layperson like me can understand this, why do zoinks such as yourself defend this nonsense.

I recently had an interesting experience at the MASP gallery in Sao Paulo. In the Classic Art area there was a Statue of Alcmene holding Heracles. Opposite the statue was a near identical picture of the Virgin holding Jesus… I just stood there thinking, “ and you couldn't figure it out from this?!!”

That sounds like cold hard proof to me. I mean, A picture and a statue that look like??? Looks to me like you just solved the Big Question, using only your razor sharp powers of perception!

Note use of phrase, "interesting experience", and try not to put words in my mouth godboy.

Best and most mature argument you've provided so far.

solum wrote:ps. Yes, some Christians force their religion on people. But atheists force their opinion too. Like you do. EVERY FUCKING DAY. And you're not even good at it!

That's right, I'm in position of power and I abuse it by oppressing peoples right to free-thinking everyday.

Try refuting what I'm saying and we can have a debate. All you've done is the usual theistic shite that involves attacking the person because you know you haven't a fucking leg to stand on in a rational and logical debate.

Don't let me down gentlemen.

What can I say... I throw a couple of ideas into the ring, hoping for a bit of intelligent debate about the origins of Jesusism and "wammo!", the typical theist reply, he takes it all personally and can't open his mind to reasoned debate.

If anyone else wants to chat about religion from a secular and therefore neutral and historical position I'm keen... History of this stuff is interesting.

there is loads of references to the Christianity / Dionysus link made in From Hell by Alan Moore, I'll need to go through it again, but its pretty scary stuff.

I just dont like it because when my parents took me to church I noticed all the poor families giving their money each week when they could barely afford themselves clothes.

No god I would believe in would do require people to do such a thing.
My pretty pony! Why, Zorak, why? You could have had any woman you wanted! But you chose the woman I love almost as much as I love myself! You ruined my life, you ruined her life, and now, I'm going to ruin your life!!!

From what I understand the Romans had to kill Jesus.

This wing nut made louder wingnut comments than all the other wingnuts and his resolve was firm and he couldn't be swayed by the authorities that be at the time(Jews). This was causing ire in the population(auf Juden) and so the Romans nailed him to a cross.

Hope I didn't offend. I'm sure I did.

The “Virgin Birth” myth is nothing special at all, Zeus was running around impregnating mortals left and right.

from what i know about greek mythology zeus had sex with mortal women. not so much "virgin births."

the historical existence of jesus i think is inconclusive to either side. also, i love that a thread called "zombie: jesus" has turned into a debate about jesus' historical existence. there was definitely a guy referred to numerous times in Roman and Jewish texts. whether this guy was jesus, or the son of god, or a bearded long-hair in a robe playing basketball with children is not certain by most reasonable means.

The current issue of Harper's has a pretty interesting article (cover story) on the Gospel of Thomas entitled "Jesus Without The Miracles."

The article claims that, unlike Smokey Robinson, Jesus is better without them.
