I have yet to hear this, but William Basinski's Disintegration Loops seems to be a recommend from everybody (all the more reason to stay away from it..), but I have to say, I'm a bit interested. Its on my list of things to watch for in the used CD bin.

Definately get the Disintegration Loops cds - some of the most heartbreakingly beautiful music ever produced

Is that still going? I thought it had shut down / burnt down or something? I've 'played' there in a sense; did two talks there, one on the run-up to the demonstration against the World Bank / IMF in Prague (I think) and one a few weeks before Mayday 2001.

Yeah it did burn (just as my noise band were supposed to do their second gig supporting Melt Banana of all things, true story, still bitter) but its sorted now I'm playing there again on New Years Eve.

awhile back I picked up a box set some dude put out, it's called 'Every Tuesday' he recorded his day. He gets up gets dressed, drives to work, parks his car, walks in, works a few hours then goes home. It's on like 15 CD's and it's great. He listens to Howard Stern on the drive in and some weird noise band on the way home.
It came with a little map of where he parked downtown and his path walking to work and whatnot. I think it's one of the best 'ambient' recordings I've heard, you hear the train and musicians on the street and when he gets to work he has some pretty funny conversations.
When I think' ambient' I always think of field recordings from different places, not crappy slowed down techno.

Then you should definitely check out Radiocecchetto's atmosphere recordings. Similar stuff, the guy records his electric blinds, his printer,
the restaurant he goes to.
