A friend of mine was following myself and a girl who was driving, he was on a motorbike and we were in a pickup truck. The girl stopped hard for whatever reason and he rammed into the back of the truck, did a complete somersault over our vehicle and landed on his feet in front of us. Bad thing is when he landed he broke both of his legs, compound fractures, bones sticking out lots blood and screaming in agony. His legs and back are still all fucked up and this was years and years ago.
You'd have to be insane driving one of those things around, especially with all these fucking 16 year old stoned retards and 90 year old fossils yapping on their cell phones driving around like lunatics these days.

The girl was fat, so no.

Helmet, pants, gloves, leather, boots if you got em. (no flip flops and shorts)

My enduro got totalled by some young girl. Head on at about 45mph each. Got scars and no more bike.

Be careful and assume everyone on the road is a moron (whether you are driving a motorcycle, car, bicycle or those cool shoes with wheels on em).

Seriously though....

#1. Yes, you are at greater risk on a motorcycle than in a car.

#2. You need to compensate for both #1 and the others around you, or you will get hurt.


I know there are a lot of jack-ass moto riders, just as there are a lot of idiot drivers.. trust me, the jack-ass moto riders make me as nervous as they do you... but don't put all motorcycle riders in that category.

Two BIG reasons why we have too many moto related accidents in this country:

1) inexperienced young riders go out and get high powered sport bikes they can't handle. They may or may not wear proper protective gear.

2) inexperienced old riders go out and get ill-handling cruiser bikes and don't wear proper protective gear.

Why we don't have a "tiered" licensing system in this country I have no idea.

Anyway, anyone who's out of control on the road (which is the majority of autos and motos these days) make me nervous.... but ya know.... it's good to be nervous when on a road. It keeps you alert.

I have to agree with what others have said here:

- textile or leather jacket. I have a solid leather for cold weather, perf'd leather for warmer weather. The few times I've gone out in a t-shirt I feel extremely vunerable. I have no idea how some people do that.

- leather gloves.

- over the heel boots.

- I wear jeans a lot... sometimes proper riding pants. I am aware of the risks when I wear only jeans... if you go down they're good for about 1 foot of sliding on pavement before you get to skin. Ouch.

Proper gear kicks ass. My girl dumped our Vespa and barely got a scratch 'cause she had a full-face helmet, armored mesh jacket and good gloves.
