I travel all year long with gear betwixt the US and London. If I am bringing a guitar back across to the UK that does not have a proper flight case I put it in a Pioneer Packaging Wardrobe box. You can get these easily from any place that sells cardboard boxes for shipping, it's the one that says 24" on it. It is worth the little bit of effort to find as soon as you can upon arrival, because you can just slip the whole guitar in it's case into this box and with a little newspaper you can rest assured that although it's in the hold of the plane it is well protected. Especially with BA you can no longer count on getting your guitars on as carry on luggage. The last resort is to put said ax into a Gig Bag ( can not believe I wrote that ). There really is no other option than to bring that on with you, but I've never been willing to do that myself. It has worked for guys in my band however.
