I remember that incident! I also remember some drunk at university explaining to me that the punishment was perfectly justified because he would be very sad if he had a nice car ruined by spray paint, and that he too would wish corporal punishment on a vandal, as cars are valuable things, especially expensive ones. "I mean, maybe not the cane if it was just a Renault Clio, but definitely for a Mercedes."
