Re: Guitar rigs as cultural statements

Hmmm…there is a bit of a thing with the younger jazz and trained-avant set in Australian for using absolute shit guitar rigs. Not hipster-shit like cool looking 60s stuff, but absolute bottom-peg big box guitar store stuff. Although unstated, the idea is that one’s chops and arrangement skills are supposed to be so top notch that gear is irrelevant. There is also a focused hatred of guitar-dudezz and whatnot.

Although I do appreciate the sentiment, there is a world of texture and timbre out there that they are missing, and which would lend dimensions to what some of them are doing I think.

Yeah.. I just saw a viola player at a free jazz gig play thru Peavey's version of a tiny Roland Cube set on a plastic chair. I can't say whether it sounded good or bad, because it was barely audible over the sax/drum duo.

These types of musicians get flown to Europe to play festivals and shit, I think they can invest in something slightly better!

I was pretty close to getting an 8x10 for my current band but went with two 1x15's as they're so much easier to move and pack. For guitar I'm all about combos on 2x12 cabs, 4x12's are such a pain in the ass.

I think the stoner doom dudes will always have the stacks upon stacks, but for "normal" people I think the smaller offerings are so much better than they used to be (and louder).

Sharing is increasingly common in midwest PRF-y land, but it's still bands bringing some stuff and not a venue backline which does seem to be more of a NYC thing.
Yeah its a backline thing here. Almost every place has at least drum shells, a bass amp, and a guitar cabinet.

This situation is almost always miserable for drummers, because every back line kit has toneless, beat to fuck pinstripe heads, and hardware that’s no longer adjustable (typically, floor tom legs are permanently set to “too low” with duct tape).
